Our Roots

"We didn’t start with the best rods—we started with what we had. Now, we build what we wish we’d had all along."

-The Founders

Cast from the Start

Fishing Was Always the Plan

We were the kids who fished with whatever we could get our hands on—garage-sale gear, hand-me-down rods, busted reels. It didn’t matter. We weren’t chasing trophies; we were chasing the tug of something wild on the other end of the line.

Those early days taught us more than any guidebook ever could: how to read water, how to improvise, and how to fall in love with the process. Fishing wasn’t a phase—it was the foundation.

The Ugly Stick & the Dry Fly

Two Paths, Same Water

Ruben fell hard for the Ugly Stik—a workhorse rod that could take a beating and still haul in fish. For him, it was about feel, grit, and getting the job done no matter the conditions.

Nathan, meanwhile, discovered fly fishing and the beauty of precision and finesse. Each cast was art, every drift intentional. Together, we saw the full spectrum: strength and subtlety. Both matter. Both belong.

Built for Every Angler

Designing the Rods We Always Needed

When we came together to build Wasatch Tenkara Rods, we didn’t want to create just one kind of rod—we wanted to create your kind of rod. Whether you're packing light into the high country or need backbone for pushing big water, we make a rod that fits the way you fish.

That’s why we obsess over action, weight, and durability. It’s not about following tradition—it’s about refining it. From soft, compact creek tools to long, heavy hitters, we build tenkara rods that do more because we’ve lived through less.

"We started with what we had, not what we wanted—and that’s exactly why we know what makes a rod great."

-Ruben Garza (co-founder of Wasatch Tenkara Rods)

Ruben’s words get to the heart of Wasatch Tenkara’s origin. The gear we grew up with wasn’t perfect—it was pieced together, beaten up, and often borrowed. But those early days shaped how we fish and how we build. We know what makes a rod truly great not because we had the best from the start, but because we didn’t. That experience taught us what matters most: reliability, feel, and purpose-driven design. It’s not nostalgia—it’s insight. And it’s what drives us to craft rods that earn a place in every angler’s pack, no matter where they fish or how they cast.
